best resveratrol supplements
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010Why Aren't You Using Resveratrol Supplements?
Most people don't realize this but the best way to get resveratrol benefits is by getting it from resveratrol supplements. What you are probably are thinking is -- Why?
First, a little history. Although we have known about its existence for decades it was a 2006 Harvard study along with numerous others that have unearthed the numerous resveratrol benefits. These include protection against age-related diseases such as cancer, diabetes 2, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimer's.
How does it work?
This is accomplished in two ways.
1] Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants that suppress the negative effects of the natural oxidation in our bodies.
2] This is where it gets interesting. resveratrol imitates calorie restriction in our diets. Studies as far back as World War 2 have shown that reducing calorie intake in organisms as diverse as yeast and mammals has an anti-aging effect. In humans and mammals this is done through a family of genes called Sirtuins. Although research is still on going, the first of these, Sirt 1, is what we now believe at least partially responsible for cell regulation. This includes stabilizing and repairing DNA molecules thus preventing cancer from forming. Sirt 1 also slows down the cell and tissue changes related to aging.
In other words, Sirt 1 thinks that there are fewer calories even if it is an illusion; but it doesn't seem to matter because the anti-aging and anti-disease process is started anyway.
Why is a supplement better?
What we are dealing with here is a natural plant antibiotic from the flavonoid family derived chiefly from red wine, red grape seeds and skins and to a lesser extent mulberries and peanuts. Multiple studies have indicated that somewhere between 10-50 mg per day is ample for most of us. Unfortunately we will not get any where near that amount unless we drink 10-20 bottles of wine or constantly munch on grape skins.
In addition, there is a lot we not know about flavonoids as a group but one thing that is agreed on is that they don't work alone. Even if you get some of them through natural foods you would still miss out on others that would be needed to get the full effect.
What are the best resveratrol supplements?
It is possible and desirable to take it as part of a balanced vitamin/nutrient plan. Our supplement should contain 10-50 mg, be from natural sources [look for the word trans] and have a high potency [50% of active ingredients is the best]. When combined with the right antioxidants, enzymes and vitamins we will have a powerful life extending cocktail.
