If people want to research, nothing seems to beat the internet, which is why so many people have spent time online researching antioxidants. Usually, they'll spend more time and then add in some money, actually buying antioxidant supplements and they do it for a good reason. Antioxidants can make a very positive difference in your health. But is taking supplements enough?
What Antioxidants Do For Your Health
To understand what antioxidants do and why theyre important, you need to understand free radicals, which are caused by rogue electrons. Lets go to the big picture first and then focus in on free radicals.
Your body is a complicated system. It is a collection of organs, like your brain and your liver and even your skin, that each performs a certain job. They all need to do their job for you to be truly healthy. Your organs are made of living tissue, composed of trillions of cells made up of molecules and their component atoms, each with their proper count of electrons. The sharing of electrons is what binds atoms into molecules, but they can become damaged and lose and electron. This creates a free radical because the atom missing an electron will "steal" it from the closest source, which creates in its turn another unstable atom.
What you end up with is a chain reaction that if left to continue will damage the cells within the organ tissue and will eventually damage the organ.
We have trillions of cells in our bodies and each day they can be hit up to 10,000 times by free radicals, capable of setting off a chain reaction of destruction. However what antioxidants do is stop the reaction because they are uniquely capable of donating an electron to a free radical without becoming one in turn. They stop the process before it becomes destructive.
Does free radical damage really pose a serious risk to your health? You bet it does! Here's a partial list of some of the conditions that are brought about at least in part, by the damage caused by free radicals - Alzheimer's, some types of Canada, rheumatoid arthritis and other acute and chronic inflammatory conditions, Parkinson's and type II diabetes. I believe that it's really important to reduce your own production of free radicals and up your level of antioxidants and making a decision to buy antioxidants is one thing you can do. But it isn't the whole picture. You should also:
1- Think about reducing your production of free radicals! In other words to correct the damage- slow down the cause. Smoking and second hand smoke, bad diet, chemicals that don't belong in your body and pollution all create free radicals. So does heavy exercise.
2- Eat Better. Naturally, if you don't have a healthy diet - you won't be healthy. Fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and legumes. Honestly, the list of antioxidant rich foods is very long and you're bound to find something you'll love.
3- There is a role for antioxidant supplements in your health plan. Some of them like vitamins C and E might be on your list even before you think of adding antioxidants to your plan. Other excellent and very frequently used supplements are cordyceps and resveratrol.
4- Glutathione is the body's Master Antioxidant, but not something you can take as a supplement. Oral glutathione supplements apparently can't make it through the digestive system to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Instead you can take a Glutathione precursor.
